Godspell Just in time for the season of thanksgiving comes Godspell, a joyous stage production at the St. Jacobs Country Playhouse that will lift your sprits with its eternal story of friendship, loyalty and love.

“Godspell is a high-energy musical that features an immensely talented cast who recreate the stories and lessons of the Bible in our present day,” says Alex Mustakas, Artistic Director of Drayton Entertainment. “With its spectacular music, drama, humour, and timeless message, Godspell appeals to theatregoers of all ages.”

Based on the Gospel according to St. Matthew, this contemporary retelling of the life of Jesus has touched the hearts of audiences around the world with its Tony-nominated score filled with such iconic numbers as “Day By Day,” “Light of the World,” and “Turn Back, O Man.” A unique production that is at once humorous, prophetic and deeply compelling, Godspell is perfect for those who love to hear the old story told in a fresh new way.

Taking on the role of Jesus is Jake Stern. An alumni of the Performance Education Program at Huron Country Playhouse where he performed in Disney’s High School Musical (2010), Stern makes his professional Drayton Entertainment debut in Godspell. A talented young artist, Stern has also performed on stage at Stratford Festival and Victoria Playhouse Petrolia. His songs “You’re the One” and “I Need You” can be heard on popular Christian radio stations around Ontario.

Embodying both the baptizer and the betrayer, Graham Pankhurst takes on the complex dual role of John the Baptist and Judas. Seen earlier this season at the Drayton Festival Theatre in the smash-hit production The Songs of Sinatra, Pankhurst will undoubtedly bring the same energy and smooth vocals to Godspell.

Other notable cast members include Lisa Michelle Cornelius, Michael De Rose, Michael Hogeveen, Stacey Kay, Ivan Lo, Alessia Lupiano, and Rebecca McCauley.

Guiding this youthful cast is Director David Hogan. As current Co-Artistic Director of the Victoria Playhouse Petrolia, Hogan brings a wealth of experience to Godspell, which was staged last season at his theatre to overwhelming audience response.  Other members of the Creative Team include Choreographer Adele Mackenzie, Music Director Mark Payne, and Lighting Designer Jeff Johnston Collins.

Godspell’s sparkling score will be brought to life by an outstanding five piece band that features Alex Bearg and David Klinger on Guitar, Dan Bearg on Drums and Mark Laidman on Bass.
