Launched as the Three Centuries Festival in 1979, the Elora Festival has evolved into an internationally acclaimed annual music event. The Elora Festival attracts capacity crowds for four weeks of international calibre music, from large-scale classical works for choir and orchestra to intimate evenings of jazz and popular music.
The Elora Festival Singers are an all-professional Grammy- and Juno-nominated chamber choir founded in 1980 by Noel Edison as principal choral ensemble of the Elora Festival. Since 1997, the choir has been the core of the Toronto Mendelssohn Choir and the Toronto Mendelssohn Singers. Through regular concert series, recordings, broadcasts, and touring, Elora Festival Singers has established a reputation as one of the finest chamber choirs in Canada and beyond, contributing to the musical life, not only of the community, but on an international stage. With eight releases on the NAXOS label, the choir is known for its rich, warm sound and clarity of texture. The choir is renowned for its diverse styles, for its commitment to Canadian repertoire, and for its collaborations with other Canadian artists.
For fans of 365 things to do in Kitchener Waterloo, Elora is certainly a great day trip for young and old. Surrounded by rolling hills and Mennonite farmland, Elora is one of the most picturesque areas in Ontario. Famous for the spectacular Elora Gorge and its 80 foot limestone cliffs descending into the Grand and Irvine Rivers, adventure enthusiasts and nature lovers regularly visit Elora to enjoy the fun and take in the glorious natural beauty. There is tubing the gorge and swimming at Elora Quarry.
In the village of Elora, many original stone buildings from the 1800’s still make up the downtown village centre. Over the decades, Elora has maintained its old world charm and the century-old buildings have been transformed into unique galleries, gift shops, artists studios and charming restaurants creating a four-season shopping and dining destination.
Elora is also a cultural haven with so much to offer. Rich in music, visual arts, crafts, upscale boutiques, natural beauty, architecture, culinary flavours, and a diverse culture, Elora provides an alternative lifestyle not typically found in small, rural communities. The Elora festival typifies this.
