Good Friday Blood Donor Clinic
As many prepare for the Easter long weekend, Canadian Blood Services is reminding people that it is important to make and keep appointments to donate blood.
The need for blood never takes a holiday – especially over a long weekend, when platelets are particularly important. One way to collect platelets is through the donation of whole blood. Platelets are one of the vital components required to make blood clot. Some patients, such as those with cancer, can experience prolonged bleeding and need large quantities of platelets as part of their treatment. Since platelets have a shelf life of only five days, it is not possible to create a reserve – so donors are needed throughout the holiday to help save lives.
On average, someone in Canada requires blood or blood products every 60 seconds. With one donation, Canadians can give a gift that saves up to three lives. Making a blood donation before or after the long weekend helps ensure an adequate supply for those in need.
Canadian Blood Services encourages Canadians to call 1 888 2 DONATE (1 888 236-6283) for clinic or eligibility information, or to book an appointment.
