Date Night in Waterloo: Tofu and Sax

Date Night in Waterloo: Tofu and SaxIn the first of our ongoing ideas of “date night” we visit the China Garden Restaurant (one of my favorites) on University Ave at Regina for some real Chinese food followed by a trip to the old Button Factory for some bass saxophone explorations. Should be an interesting night.

The China Garden Restaurant

Our new guest food blogger, Maple (Table for Maple) recently visited The China Garden Restaurant. Here’s what she said:

China Garden is a definite winner of scrumptious Chinese Cuisine in Waterloo. It’s a simple, no fuss kind of place with whiteboard special menu items. The TV is typically on a Chinese channel. And also typical of real Chinese restaurants there is never an extra charge for tea.

On the Table for Maple:

  1. Casserole with Tofu and Mixed Meats (Not on online menu)
  2. Eggplant with black bean sauce ($8.95)
  3. Fillet fish with sweet corn sauce ($12.95)

These are typical Chinese communal dishes. The casseroles are not included on the online menu, dine-in only. These all-in-one-pot orders are the best! Presentation is probably not in the Chinese food dictionary. But neither is bland.

Chinese food has a bad reputation of being overly laden with sodium and grease. I think you can request for less salt/oil at China Garden. The owner is unbelievably friendly! On one notable occasion, I only realized that I did not have sufficient cash/card on hand after ordering take-out – can’t describe how embarrassed I felt when I tried to cancel my order! Despite not having started on my order, the owner simply waved it off –

No worries, just pay the difference next time you come in!

Okay, you may be thinking – no biggie, I am probably a regular.

Not! I am definitely not! Either the owner is extremely good at exploiting customers’ guilt to come back for another meal, or he is just too nice to be true! How many restaurants are willing to do that? I doubt there are many, or even any. Well, I definitely felt grateful and guilty, and wasted no time in coming back for another heart-warming meal.

Free Form Constructs

Free Form Constructs is a juxtaposition of the concepts of freedom and structure.

How about continuing the evening of freshly minted music! Free Form Constructs is a collaborative concert between the Thin Edge New Music Collective and Montreal-based saxophonist/composer Jason Sharp exploring the relationship between form, structure and improvisation in contemporary Canadian music. Jason Sharp will perform his new composition for bass saxophone and amplified heartbeat, “Compose Yourself” based on the concepts of Naada Yoga, and TENMC will premiere new works by emerging composers Anna Höstman and Fjóla Evans as well as performing Claude Vivier’s classic composition Pulau Dewata, arranged by August Murphy-King.
