waterloo region conservation areaThis long family day holiday weekend, if you’re not joining the the crowds at the Uptown Waterloo’s Icedogs Festival, or taking part in any of the free and fun Family Day activities, you just want to get away from it all, get out and enjoy nature, why not visit one of our Grand River Conservation areas? There’s skating, ice fishing (not at the same time), snow shoeing and cross country skiing.


Laurel Creek Conservation Area, Waterloo

Just minutes away from the cities of Waterloo and Kitchener, Laurel Creek Conservation Area provides visitors with a quiet place to relax and enjoy the outdoors. Cross-country skiing and snowshoeing trails are open to use. Drinks and snacks are available on weekends.

There is even ski equipment available to rent!

Where: 625 Westmount Rd N, Waterloo

When: open daily

Time: 9:00am-

Cost:$5.50 adults, $2.75 children

Shade’s Mills Conservation Area, Cambridge

Shade’s Mills has been called the best-kept secret in Cambridge. The conservation area has 12 km of hiking trails through a mature hardwood forest that winds along Mill Creek. It is open for cross country skiing, snowshoeing, ice skating and ice fishing during the winter.

There is ski equipment available to rent and you can even rent a ice hut! Northern Pike, Yellow Perch and Black Crappie can be caught during winter.
