The Huether Hotel is an eclectic place, a landmark in Uptown Waterloo on the corner of King and Princess Streets. Like an old hotel should be, it’s comfortable and cool, odd and distinctive but mostly it offers a diverse mix of things to do, food to eat, beer to drink and music to listen to.
I’ve been to the Huether Hotel many times, usually to its Cafe 1842. It’s more than a coffee shop, a place to open up the laptop and get some work done (like now). It’s also got an interesting menu: Bean and Barley Soup, Sea to Sea Salmon Salad, a Triple-Decker Turkey PLT (with peameal bacon) to the Fabulous Falafel.
The Huether Hotel is a big place over 12,000 square feet of cafe, restaurant, pub, and club. Last friday night I took the family our to the Lion Brewery Restaurant. It’s downstairs at the back of the hotel. It has a real pub atmosphere with it’s low ceiling and exposed rock walls. The menu includes pub favorites like Burgers and Beer Battered Cod as well as some more interesting selections like Misrati Rice and Bulldog Beef.
For night life, the recently opened Jazz Room offers up award winning jazz combos every Friday and Saturday nights. As a jazz enthusiast, having a venue like this so close means I don’t have to travel all the way to The Rex in downtown Toronto.
